President of the Pembrokeshire County Bowling Association, John Baggott, of Tenby Bowling Club, was a happy man on Saturday!

Not only did the weather hold off for the annual bowls finals held at his green, Tenby, but he also won two titles and now qualifies for the Welsh finals in Llandrindod Wells next month.

His first title was snatched in a dramatic rinks final, which saw he and his clubmates, Neil Dickinson, Mike Jackson and John Roberts go to an extra end against Saundersfoot's Graham Hughes, Paul Blayney and brothers Myrddin and Berwyn Dennis.

After a spirited fightback, having been 12-3 adrift at one stage, the Tenby quartet rallied over the last few ends and, with the front three setting up the head in the home side's favour on the deciding 22nd end, it was left to skip John Roberts to clinch the match with a superb last wood, which saw him ditch the white to seal victory.

Later in the afternoon, John Baggott returned to the green with Pat Currie and chalked up a two-shot victory over Ken Edwards and Richard Jones, of Pembroke Dock BC, in the Over 60s pairs.

Another game to have spectators on the edge of their seats was the blue riband singles final, which produced a classic display of high quality bowling.

Played on show rink one, the lead continually changed hands, before newly-married former junior international, Craig Jones, of Haverfordwest, eventually beat current Welsh U25, Craig Guymer, of Tenby, 21-18.

Also off to Mid Wales next month are pairs winners Mike Jackson and John Roberts, triples winners for the second year running Peter Day, Paul Diment and Andrew Muskett, Under 18s and Under 25 winners Luke Rees and Craig Guymer, respectively, all of Tenby BC; Over 60s singles winner Mal Evans, of Pendine, and Over 60s rinks winners, Tudor Harries, Ken Edwards, Brian Dowling and Richard Jones.

In the mixed pairs, it was third time unlucky for Tenby's junior international Ysie White, who just failed to get her name on the silverware for the third successive year. This year, partnered by Joe Richards, they were pipped by one shot by Haverfordwest's Mary Codd and Barrie Absalom.

President John Baggott presented the trophies, assisted by competition secretary David Summers, and thanked his own club for hosting the event and all who had helped make the day a success.
