The Tenby Town Team has made a good start and is well placed to decide on priorities for town centre development, according to Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for South Pembrokeshire, Delyth Evans. Ms Evans was responding to the first annual report on the Tenby Town Team presented to the economy overview and scrutiny committee of Pembrokeshire County Council. The Tenby Town Team was set up by the county council in 2013 to help regenerate Tenby alongside five other Town Teams in Haverfordwest, Fishguard, Milford Haven, Pembroke and Pembroke Dock. Ms Evans welcomed the annual report on the Tenby Town Team and its efforts to drive forward improvements in the town. "The idea of Town Teams is a very good one. It isn't an easy job because some of the issues like car parking and new signage generate strong opinions, and it always comes down to how much money is available for improvements. But a lot of progress has been made in the first year of the scheme. It is encouraging that vacancy rates in Tenby are well below the UK average, at 5.6% per cent compared to a UK average of 10.1 per cent." Ms Evans said proper scrutiny of expenditure on regeneration projects was essential: "My main concern is that there must be proper financial control and scrutiny of all money spent on improvement schemes, so that the recent misuse of a regeneration grant in Pembroke Dock doesn't happen again. Complete transparency and rigorous auditing is therefore essential to ensure taxpayers' money is well spent. Overall, the Town Teams have made a good start and I would like to thank those involved for giving up their time and energy to improve their local community."
