One of the top events in Tenby’s summer calendar has been cancelled this year.

Organisers of the Terry Hermann Bass Fishing Tournament, which raises funds for Cancer Research UK, say they have been unsuccessful after a huge effort to gain dispensation from local and national government to fish (unlicensed) for sea bass on July 29 and therefore ignore the blanket ban presently imposed by European legislature.

Said a post on social media: “Based on our competition’s longevity and the serious amount of money raised in the past for Cancer Research UK, we have unfortunately been unsuccessful.

“Many suggestions to replace the usual format have been put, however, the organisers, including Mark Hermann Thomas have decided that rather than compromise the effort put in by everyone to create this as a popular date on the Tenby calendar, we should postpone our 15th Terry Hermann Bass Fishing Competition for 12 months and pray that common sense prevails allowing us to make number 15 bigger and better than ever.

“We understand and share in everyone’s disappointment that there will not be a competition this year.

“We would also like to thank the people who have suggested alternative ideas such as the largest mackerel, different species, etc etc.

“We ask all involved competitors, sponsors and auction participants keep the faith, fingers crossed we will see The Terry Hermann Bass Competition pick up where it left off and 2019 will be an event that Tenby and Cancer Research is proud of.”
