Plaid Cymru has reiterated calls to scrap proposals that could ‘devastate’ Welsh family farms.
On a recent farm visit, Plaid Cymru has pointed to the Labour Chancellor’s change of direction on income tax to reiterate calls for a similar move on farm inheritance tax.
This comes after a Welsh Affairs committee report highlighted how the changes to agricultural property relief and business property relief has created a ‘climate of uncertainty and confusion’ for Welsh farmers.
Speaking after the farm visit hosted by Aled Jones, NFU Cymru’s President, Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth hit out at the UK Labour Government for ignoring the needs of Wales’ rural communities.
Plaid Cymru leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth AS, said: “For too long, consecutive UK Governments have ignored rural Wales’ needs and undermined our farming communities. The Tories cut our farm funding and gave us a disastrous Brexit, but this UK Labour Government’s sheer ignorance towards rural Wales takes it to another level.
“Introducing Labour’s changes to inheritance tax will cause and existential crisis in our countryside. It will undermine the future viability and sustainability of so many farming businesses, and it must be stopped.
“If Labour can U-turn on income tax then they should do so on inheritance tax too.
Joining Mr ap Iorwerth on the visit was Plaid’s Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs, Llyr Gruffydd MS, and local MS for Arfon Sian Gwenllian.
Mr Gruffydd said: “We’re grateful to Aled for the opportunity to discuss many of the challenges and opportunities facing the sector at what is a particularly difficult time for the industry.
“From falling milk prices to the Sustainable Farming Scheme there was plenty to discuss as we prepare for the Senedd elections in May.
“Plaid Cymru is serious about backing Welsh farmers and Welsh family farms, but all our efforts will be undermined unless the UK Government use the upcoming Budget to scrap their hugely damaging IHT proposals, once and for all.”
Local MS for Arfon, Siân Gwenllian, said: “I have been speaking to farmers in Arfon over recent months and they have all portrayed the same message as we’ve heard from Aled Jones today - the devastating changes to inheritance tax must be scrapped.
“Plaid Cymru has been unequivocal in our support for farmers here in Arfon and across Wales, from campaigning for major improvements to the Sustainable Farming Scheme, to demanding the funding farming businesses deserve from Westminster.
“Labour has let Wales’ rural communities down. Only a Plaid Cymru Government offers all of Wales’ communities the new leadership they deserve in 2026.”
