Police officers at Tenby and Narberth have been making inquiries lately into instances of dogs attacking sheep and lambs. In one incident, approximately 15 lambs were killed by one dog in the Lampeter Velfrey area. "All dogs have it in them to chase sheep, even the most docile of pets," said Inspector Les Clark, of Tenby police station. "It is of course an offence to allow a dog to worry livestock and it is a dog owner's absolute responsibility to keep that animal under control at all times. All dogs should be kept on leads in the countryside, especially when in the vicinity of livestock. "Farmers have rights and responsibilities under the law in this situation. They are entitled to shoot a dog that worries their livestock if they are unable to catch it. All they must do then is inform the police of the incident. "Dog owners, especially in rural areas, must be responsible to prevent unnecessary loss of livestock and possible deaths of their own pets."
