Local police have this week praised New Year's Eve revellers for giving them a trouble-free night.

A crowd of over 6,000 saw in the New Year in Tenby's Tudor Square, while between 2,500 and 3,000 people welcomed in 2002 in neighbouring Saundersfoot.

"It is difficult to put an actual number on the crowds, but Tudor Square was definitely up to its maximum capacity of 6,300," acting inspector, Steve Britton told the Observer.

"It was my first New Year in Tenby and it was a very enjoyable occasion. Everyone was in high spirits and very well behaved," he continued.

"There were no arrests, serious incidents or incidents of a crime and disorder nature reported, which I think was due to the good partnership with the licensees, who were very professional and very supportive, and by having a high visibility police presence early in the evening which prevented any potential incidents occurring," he pointed out.

"I would like to thank the communities of both Tenby and Saundersfoot and visitors to the area for conducting their celebrations in a very well behaved fashion.

In addition, acting inspector Britton thanked the organisers of the Saundersfoot festivities for the 'professional' way they handled the event, and also paid tribute to the members of the special constabulary who were on duty on New Year's Eve assisting the officers with their duties and three civilian volunteers who gave up their time to man Tenby's CCTV system.
