Sir,

The introduction of parking restrictions in Tenby is not a matter that the police service has any control of. Parking restrictions are introduced by the local authority and single and double yellow lines are maintained by them.

I can say however that anti-social and indiscriminate parking is the one subject that I receive most complaints about from local residents and business people, who say that quality of life and sometimes public safety is affected by it.

The enforcement of parking regulations is carried out by local police officers and two very experienced traffic wardens whose job description is to ensure the free flow of traffic in the town. The issue of parking tickets is only one small part of this and is generally carried out as a last resort.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, officers and traffic wardens have issued 56 fixed penalty notices in and around the town. Many of these tickets were issued as a result of complaints from local residents, including the misuse of residents only parking bays, for which residents pay for parking spaces.

The fine revenues generated by the issue of all fixed penalty notices (including those for speeding and other driving offences) are not diverted to the Dyfed Powys Police. As an organisation, we gain no financial advantage by issuing a greater number of notices.
