Dyfed Powys Police, as part of a national campaign, took part in an operation aimed at goods vehicles travelling through the region. Police officers worked very closely with partner agencies such as VOSA, DEFRA, Customs & Excise and Works & Pensions, in a bid to increase road safety. Dyfed Powys Police is committed to reducing the number of people driving illegally and to deny criminals the use of the roads. A total of 117 goods vehicles were stop-checked during the operation, with 86 found to be clear. Unfortunately, 31 were detected, with offences ranging from tachographs to brakes and tyres. Intelligence systems such as ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) were utilised successfully, checking 1,447 vehicles, with three per cent of those being stop-checked by the police. Chief Inspector Phil Davies said:"We are disappointed to see drivers and operators are not undertaking the necessary checks to ensure that their vehicles are road worthy. In some cases, as demonstrated by the results of the operation, some are clearly neglecting their vehicles. "We will continue to target those drivers and companies who have a responsibility to ensure the safety of other road users as well as themselves."
