Local police are taking positive steps to tackle a growing under-age drinking problem in the Tenby and Saundersfoot areas, they revealed this week.

Earlier this year, two teenage boys required medical treatment after consuming too much alcohol, while over the Bank Holiday weekend, five girls - one as young as 12 - were taken into police custody for their own safety after being found in an inebriated state.

Four of the girls, aged 14, were found in Saundersfoot, while the 12-year-old was in Tenby.

The girls' parents were contacted and they were taken home, but Sgt. Gary Jones, of Tenby police station, said yesterday (Thursday) that the incidents had again raised great concern.

"We are concerned about the increasing number of incidents of alcohol misuse involving children in the Tenby and Saundersfoot areas," he said.

"As a result, we are taking positive steps in partnership with other agencies to deal with this problem.

"We would also like to highlight this problem to parents and warn them of the dangers involved in alcohol abuse."
