THE West Wales Decorative and Fine Arts Society is delighted to announce the winners of their annual competition for schools for 2014. This year the competition invited pupils working with their teacher or alone to write a short poem on a postcard and to illustrate it on the reverse side. There were two themes to choose from, 'Land of the Giants' or 'The World at War' in recognition of the centenary of World War I. The judges were very impressed with the artistic and literary skills displayed by all who took part and felt that the pictures were very well designed to match the poems. It was a difficult task to choose three winners out of the 200 or so entries received. Those chosen were: Georgia Jones from Spittal School for her poem 'Land of the Giants' in which Mount Snowdon is personified as a giant; Jazmine Rees from Broadhaven School for 'It's World War I', a very sensitive poem about the tragedy of war, the pain and the loss for those fighting and those waiting at home; and Carys Underwood from Narberth School for 'Dame Evelyn' in which she interprets giant as being someone who is brilliant in a particular field, in this case Evelyn Glennie who despite being deaf is one of Britain's top musicians. The winners all received book/art material tokens to the value of £30. The schools also received a prize - a workshop session for the winners' classes with local artist Fran Evans who is well known for her lovely illustrations for children's books.
