Sir,

Some years ago a group of youngsters doing community service were engaged in cleaning up the surrounds of the Butts Field car park in Tenby. Apart from managing to burn up their work hut, they succeeded in cutting down most of the beautiful May flower trees which gave a brilliant white display in the Spring moonlight, with a show of red berries in the autumn - all very attractive.

The destruction has been continued these last few days, with council workmen cutting down to the base all sapling within about eight yards of the car park tarmac. These trees did not seem to be of any threat to people or to cars. Will someone please explain the policy of those responsible.

On another matter, the present low tides on Tenby's North Beach exposed a few tons of old anchor chains, concrete blocks with steel embedded in them, and broken glass bottles. All this is a direct result of the harbour dredging, the debris not being sorted as the job was being done. These items constitute a serious danger to bathers and children playing in the sand.

Tenby Town Council and the Pembrokeshire have both been notified of the foregoing and have said that the beach problem will be dealt with.

G. R. Hughes,

Tenby.
