A call to convert a former kitchen fitting business in Haverfordwest’s High Street to a fitness studio has been given the go-ahead by county planners.
In an application to Pembrokeshire County Council, Amy Abraham, of Tidal Fitness Ltd, sought permission for a change of use of the former ‘CwtchHaus Design’ kitchen and sales fitting business at 17 High Street to a fitness studio.
A supporting letter from the property’s landlord said: “Ms Abraham intends to use the premises as a boutique fitness studio, offering small group exercise classes and personal training sessions, all of which will be conducted indoors.
“The nature of the business is low-impact and non-disruptive, with footfall broadly consistent with former retail use and within reasonable operating hours. No significant external alterations are proposed, and the character of the High Street frontage will remain in keeping with the surrounding retail and commercial environment.
“I can confirm as the landlord that I fully support this application and have granted a commercial lease to Tidal Fitness Ltd (subject to the signed lease contract being presented) to operate from the premises, subject to planning consent.
“This new use represents a valuable addition to the town centre, encouraging active lifestyle choices for local residents and helping to support the vibrancy and sustainability of Haverfordwest’s commercial core.
“It is also worth noting that the unit has been recently vacated and securing a responsible tenant with a viable, locally focused business model is key to its future upkeep and integration with the High Street economy.”
An officer report recommending approval said: “Whilst the proposal would result in the loss of A1 (shop) premises, it would result in the provision of a D2 use (fitness studio) along a secondary retail frontage within the town centre. Policy SP 14 supports development opportunities in hub towns, to encourage sustainable communities and a thriving economy.
“The proposed fitness studio use would have a positive economic impact in terms of providing employment within a hub town. The proposal would also deliver positive social benefits creating an environment for physical activity, supporting the social, physical and mental well-being of users.”
The application was conditionally approved by planners.
