Plans to redevelop a residential home into a state-of-the-art 60-bed care facility are progressing, with construction work due to begin this autumn as part of a major investment in care provision for Carmarthenshire.

The redevelopment of the former 34-bed Play Y Bryn residential home in Cwmgwili will be funded in partnership with Welsh Government through the Health and Social Care Integration and Rebalancing Capital Fund (IRCF) Programme, as part of the wider West Wales Regional Partnership Board Capital Programme.

More than £13 million has been approved by Welsh Government to progress the scheme, with the remaining costs being met through Carmarthenshire County Council’s Capital Programme.

The redevelopment will see Plas Y Bryn transformed into Wales’s first dual-registered nursing and residential home, providing a modern facility with flexible, high-quality residential and nursing support for older people and those with complex needs.

Designed as a net zero Carbon facility will also support the Council’s ambition to become a net zero Local Authority by 2030.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services, Children and Families, Cllr Jane Tremlett, said: “The redevelopment of Plas Y Bryn is a significant milestone in our commitment to providing modern, high-quality care facilities for the people of Carmarthenshire. This investment will not only improve the quality of life for residents but also support the integration of health and social care services in the community.”

Deputy Minister for Social Care, Delyth Jewell, said: "This significant investment shows what can be achieved when we work together to transform social care by creating modern facilities that meet people’s needs in their community. The redevelopment of Plas Y Bryn is an example of how we are working with local authorities and health boards to ensure care services are fit for the future. I look forward to seeing this important project progress.”

Following a competitive procurement process, Wynne Construction has been appointed as the main contractor for the landmark project.
