PAUL Davies MS is launching a new business listening campaign, called The Big Business Conversation, which will see the Conservative Senedd Member hold online business advice surgeries and visit businesses across the constituency to hear first-hand about the challenges they face and the support they need to grow.
The launch follows the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), published on October 8, which reveal:
• 72 per cent of UK businesses expressed concern about energy prices in late September, rising to 91 per cent in the accommodation and food services sector.
• 73 per cent of businesses were concerned about rising fuel prices.
• 28 per cent of trading businesses reported a fall in turnover in August, while 29 per cent identified economic uncertainty as a challenge affecting turnover in September.
Mr Davies has called on the UK Government to pilot an effective 5 per cent rate of VAT on tourism accommodation, while urging the Welsh Government to provide stronger and more immediate business rates support.
“These figures should be a wake-up call,” he said. “Businesses are facing enormous pressures, and behind every statistic is someone trying to keep their business going, pay their staff and plan for the future.
“Here in Ceredigion Penfro, we have some fantastic businesses, from family-run shops and hotels to manufacturers, exporters and major local employers. They create jobs, support families and keep our communities going, but too many are being held back by rising costs and uncertainty.
“Both governments need to do more. I've called for a cut in VAT on tourism accommodation and greater support on business rates, but I also want to make sure the voices of local businesses are being heard. That's why I'm launching The Big Business Conversation.”

Through the initiative, Davies MS will offer online business advice surgeries alongside visits to businesses across Ceredigion Penfro, giving owners and employers the opportunity to raise concerns directly. The conversations will cover issues including operating costs, recruitment, transport, access to finance, business rates and barriers to investment.
“I want to hear what's keeping business owners awake at night, what's holding them back and, just as importantly, what would help them grow. Whether you're a sole trader, a family business or a larger employer, I want to hear from you.”
Mr Davies hopes to use the feedback to build a clearer picture of the local business environment and press both governments for changes that reflect the particular needs of west Wales.
He added:
"Businesses in rural Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire face different challenges from those in our larger cities. We need to make sure both governments understand that. I don't just want to hear about the problems. I want to hear about the opportunities too – businesses looking to expand, create jobs or invest but finding obstacles in their way.”
Businesses across Ceredigion Penfro are encouraged to contact Paul Davies MS's office to share their experiences, request a visit or register their interest in an online business advice surgery.
