At a recent fun evening in the Plas Hotel, Narberth, Rotarians and their invited guests - including young family members, were amused at the sight of pigs running through the function room of the hotel!

Prior to the evening members of the ‘League Against Cruel Animal Sports’ had called several Rotarians complaining about the advertised fundraising event involving pigs - concerned that the pigs would have suffered undue stress in being forced to race over a pre-determined race course.

The fundraiser was in fact a ‘Pig Race’ with eight pink plastic porkies lined up on a track measuring all of 8 feet long x 4 feet wide and to give them energy for their feat they were loaded with Duracell batteries.

The race was set up by retired head teacher from Dyffryn Taf school, Mr. Robert Newsome OBE, using his own equipment and he skilfully and wittily provided a running commentary on the running order of each race.

Rotarians and friends had either sponsored a race or bought a pig to help raise the kitty for the evening and a grand sum of over £700 was raised to support the charitable youth activities of the Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club.

The winners of each race were presented with appropriately coloured pink Rosettes and a small financial prize. It was an amazing sight to see about 50 adults and younger family members cheering on the four-legged beasties some of whom raced solo and others were mounted with rag doll jockeys to add to the fun of the spectacle.

Tellers and bookies for the evening were - Heulwen Elward with Husband Rotarian Robert Elward and Alun Newsome with his wife Corinne.

At the end of the enjoyable evening Rotarian President Tony Ensom thanked Robert Newsome who had been accompanied by his wife Angela and his team of ‘bookies’.
