Congratulations to local photographer Rebecca Naden, who has just won a prestigious award at a ceremony in London. The 2007 Picture Editors' Awards were held at the Great Hall of Guildhall in London on Wednesday, June 20. The awards, presented by veteran war photographer and two times Pulitzer Prize winner Horst Faas, attracted more than 8,500 entries from photographers across the UK and Ireland. Rebecca, who hails from Tenby, was the first female photographer to work for the Press Association, with whom she has been employed since 1987. At the awards ceremony, she snapped up the 'Action Images Sports Picture of the Year' for her photo of Chelsea footballer John Terry receiving an injury after being kicked in the face by Arsenal's Vassiriki Diaby. Rebecca, daughter of Marielle Naden (who still lives in Penally) and the late Major John Naden, is a former pupil at Pengelli School and Greenhill School in Tenby. As a budding young photographer, she had her first work published in the Observer, when she took images of the Tenby Dolphins swimming club. After completing her O and A-levels, Rebecca was one of 12 to get on the National Council for the Training of Journalists' pre-entry course in photography at Wednesbury, near Birmingham. She was the first girl to be accepted on the course, and came out as outstanding candidate in 1977, going on to become a trainee with the Birmingham Post and Mail, where she was their first female trainee photographer. In 1994, she won the Royal Photographer of the Year, while her work over the years has seen her photograph some of the most powerful people in the world, including Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Mikhael Gorbachev and Bill Clinton. For the past few years, Rebecca, who now lives in London, has been covering some of the top sporting events across the world, most recently the cricket World Cup in the West Indies, while this week she is sure to be donning waterproof clothing at Wimbledon!
