Sir,
Further to recent correspondence with regard to the proposed traffic closure regulations for July and August this year, I notice that in each of the recently publicised traffic restricting schemes in Durham, Rome and London, provision has been made for the access of residents at all times.
Why therefore is our county council still proposing a complete ban of vehicle access with little or no regard to the various needs of residents, property owners or businesses during the closure periods. What would be the reaction of council officials responsible for these decisions if the road or street where they live was closed for two months from 11 am until 6 pm?
Surely a fairer system would be a strictly enforced permit scheme (unlike the last time which was not properly enforced), with the allocation of a permit being given on receipt of payment of rates for property within the town walls. This would give the residents their, (I think legal), right of access at all times, except for the odd special event that I do not think people would object to.
Another point worth considering is the fact that if the present traffic regulations with regard to parking and restricted access were strictly enforced, especially during the peak busy season, there would perhaps be no need to even bring in this traffic ban!
