A 71-year-old lady from Kilgetty has been given a 12 month conditional discharge after admitting a charge of theft from a shop. Enid Lavine Rolfe, of St. Mary's Place, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing three magazines to the value of £2.25 from W.H. Smith in Tenby, on March 18, when she appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday. Prosecutor Ellie Morgan told magistrates that staff at the store had noticed certain magazines going missing over a period of time. "Just before 1 pm on the day in question, the defendant came into the shop and removed the magazines from the shelf, walked around the aisle and put the items in her bag before checking a lottery ticket at the till," she explained. "When a stock check was carried out, the three magazines showed up missing, and after viewing CCTV, the defendant was recognised as a regular customer who worked nearby in a shoe shop. "Mrs. Rolfe voluntary gave an interview to police and admitted she had left the store without paying for the items and also mentioned that she had taken magazines from there before," said Ms Morgan, who also told the court that the defendant had received cautions for three matters of shoplifting previously. The defendant's solicitor Mark Layton said his client felt somewhat "embarrassed and shamed" to be in court. Magistrates gave Mrs. Rolfe a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered her to pay £2.25 compensation to W.H. Smith. She was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £15 victim surcharge.
