‘Penally Yarn Bombers’ have been honouring not just the people - but also the animals who served and sacrificed in times of war, ahead of Remembrance services this weekend, with a display around the Pembrokeshire village - featuring ‘Gustav and Winkie’ - two adorable knitted carrier pigeons, named in honour of two real pigeons who were awarded the Dickin Medal for their service during the Second World War.
Knitted purple poppies are also featured around the village, located on the outskirts of Tenby.
“The purple poppy is a symbol of remembrance for the animals who gave their lives in service. Horses and dogs, pigeons and even camels,” the Facebook group What’s On Penally shared.
“These brave creatures worked alongside soldiers, carrying messages, pulling supplies and saving countless lives.
“During wartime, carrier pigeons were true heroes of the skies. They delivered vital messages across enemy lines when no other communication was possible. Some even received the Dickin Medal - the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross for their incredible bravery.
“Gustav and Winkie are named in honour of two real pigeons who were awarded the Dickin Medal for their service during the Second World War. The yarn versions celebrate their courage and remind us that remembrance comes in many forms.
“We hope these colourful creations bring smiles, spark conversations and help us all pause to remember the people and the animals who gave so much.
“Thank you to everyone who supports the Penally Yarn Bombers and helps keep our village displays full of love, colour and meaning,” they added.
