Tenby County Club (sponsored by LG Leisure) played their latest league match on Monday evening, against current champions, Black Rabbit Club of Pembroke, and were 4-1 losers. The first frame saw Martin Durham step up against Brett John. Martin has been in reasonably good form in practice, but when it comes to a match he seems to freeze, and this was no exception, as he was completely outplayed by Brett. The second frame saw Peter Handicott play Mike Roberts. Peter started well against a player who blows hot and cold, but he couldn't keep it going and lost on the blue. In-form Steve Cook took to the table for the next game against Andrew Smith. This was a battle of wills and produced a good tactical game, which Steve eventually won on a re-spotted black. The fourth frame saw Mark Cleevely play Gareth Aries. Mark was playing his first game for five weeks and seemed a little rusty. He did manage to produce some excellent pots, but it was all to no avail. The final frame saw captain Glyn Davies play John Lloyd. Glyn started well, but it was soon apparent that John was on form, with the Pembroke man going on to win convincingly.
CUP CLASH
With hardly any time for rest, the team was back in action on Tuesday as they played host to the Con Club from Milford in the Knockout Cup (five straight singles aggregate scores). The first frame saw Steve Cook step up against John Roberts. Steve started slowly, unusually for him, but soon got into his stride. The bad spread of the reds made this a very scrappy frame, but Steve eventually won on the black to give Tenby a seven- point lead. The second frame saw club steward Malcolm John take on Barry Mathias. Malcolm was cool, calm and collected as he showed how to do it, by winning comfortably and stretching the advantage to +34. The third frame saw Mark Cleevely take on John Reynolds. This was another nervy affair, but it was Mark who eventually and deservedly won, with Tenby now 57 points to the good. The fourth frame saw captain Glyn Davies take on Adrian Mathias. This was a tactical battle, with both players playing excellent safety, but midway through the frame, Glyn edged into the lead, which, for once, he held on to. This was probably the best frame of the night, and definitely Glyn's best of the season so far, giving Tenby a +80 advantage. The last frame saw Peter Handicott take on Lee Frost. With an 80-point start, it should have been a case of playing a containing game, pinching pots here and there, but Peter obviously didn't read the script and was well beaten by 93 points to hand the Cons a win by 13!
