Over a quarter of Welsh people plan to visit Pembrokeshire this year as their favourite UK ‘staycation’ spot.

Pembrokeshire could welcome over a quarter of people from Wales this year (27 per cent), topping the list of UK tourist hot spots that Welsh people plan to visit, followed by Llandudno/Snowdonia, London, Bath, Devon and Liverpool.

Three quarters (75 per cent) of people from Wales are choosing to indulge in UK tourist destinations this year, slightly higher than the UK average of 73 per cent, as revealed in the latest consumer survey from rural and hopsitality business insurer NFU Mutual.

Their top reasons for choosing a UK destination include the ease of planning at short notice (43 per cent), followed by simply loving what the UK has to offer (including countryside, towns, beaches and history), and the travel being less hassle (28 per cent).

Darren Seward, hospitality sector specialist at NFU Mutual, said: “It’s wonderful to see that so many people from Wales are planning to travel across land and sea to explore all that their kingdom has to offer this year.”

“Proving there’s no place like home, Pembrokeshire came top for Welsh people as spontaneous, hassle-free getaways to much-loved destinations are particularly appealing this year.

“The weak pound should make the UK a more attractive holiday option and deliver a boost for the Welsh leisure industry after the late arrival of Spring.”

Accrding to the survey, just under a fifth of people from Wales are likely to choose a UK staycation because of feeling safer here, slightly lower than the UK average (18 per cent vs 21 per cent).

Wales as a destination should expect visits from over a tenth (12 per cent) of UK-wide tourists this year, with the most holidaymakers coming in from around the Liverpool area, followed by Cardiff, Manchester, Birmingham and Sheffield, for reasons including - beautiful scenery, wildlife and mountains, the coastline, and visiting family and friends.
