A TENBY Arts Club member writes in, telling of being stopped in the street, badgered on the telephone. Asked why he/she can look so accomplished, so satisfied, so on top of life, so content?
The answer is simple. Membership of the Arts Club. It does that sort of thing to you (writes P,M).
Politicians in Westminster and the Assembly looking for a silver lining, call. They have heard the club is thriving and very buoyant. Trying to be associated so they can quote the club as an example when they declare 'You have never had it so good. Vote for me'. Opportunism in its worst form makes us suffer, but we remain stoic.
The club, however, is non political. Deals only with the Arts, but when the blandishments do come they are, of course, absolutely true.
This (Friday) evening the theme will be history, and local history too. Linda and Stuart Asman will be on stage and presenting under the awe-inspiring title 'Through my eyes - a community history told in digital stories'. Basically we will see a series of short films or stories of Pembrokeshire people or events. All in a modern art form which has been pioneered by the BBC in a project called 'Capture Wales'.
So once again the Arts Club is at the sharp end of technological advance.
The Asmans have at this time of writing made 35 complete stories out of an intended 42. They will be produced as a DVD initially and then as a book. This writer has been told the presentation is absolutely first class and entertaining.
Linda Asman, a former librarian, left Tenby some seven years ago, having been a member of the club prior to leaving. She is absolutely steeped in local history and is chairman of the Pembroke and Monkton Local History Society, no less. A bit like being Curator at the Louvre.
All sounds pretty frightening when the younger generation quote that word 'digital'. Forget computers and all that sort of thing. Anybody who can count to 10, even with the help of their fingers, are digital experts.
The meeting commences at 7.30 pm in St. Johns Church Hall. £2 entrance fee for members. £4 for non-members. Refreshments are provided and are included in the entrance fee. It is inexpensive. Inflation is not a word the Arts Club recognises. This correspondent is not too brilliant on his understanding of the word digital either.
Readers should be reminded that all the winter programme events are held on Friday evening. I say this because printing errors on official documents record yesterday (Thursday) as the date of tonight's meeting. Just another little bit of digital confusion. Hope members have not been queuing all night in fog, frost and raging blizzards, but it would give your correspondent something to write about.
