Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification students from Pembrokeshire College, studying on a variety of courses from A-Levels to national diplomas, successfully raised over £1,000 recently for two charities - Missing Wales and the Queen's Hall, Narberth.
The students were encouraged to develop enterprising ideas for charity within the community as part of their course. And as several of them had an interest in music, they organised a fund-raising event at the Queen's Hall showcasing local DJs from Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire. The five sets featured drum and base and break-beat sessions from Bassment Suburbz, Groovemasterz, NeoDex, Tactix and ALX6.
"The event went down well with the crowd; attracting over 250 people between the ages of 17 and 20," said Harry Rabjohns who is studying A-Levels in chemistry, physics and mathematics at college.
"We'd like to acknowledge the generosity of the Queen's Hall staff and volunteers as without their help this event would have been a non-starter."
After paying security costs, Queen's Hall trustee Mr. Eric Feetham, MBE, was presented with a cheque for £522 from the fund-raiser and commented: "We are very happy to receive this donation on behalf of the Queen's Hall and would hope for a repeat event in the future."
The other charity that benefited to the tune of £522 was Missing Wales: an organisation dedicated to helping missing people, their families and those who care for them. Missing Wales offers a confidential helpline that endeavours to make contact with missing people of all ages to assure others of their safety.
"Over 150 children and adults are reported missing each week in Wales making our 24-hour, seven-days-a-week charity vital in tracing missing people from Wales. The money the students raised will help to support this valuable service," said appeals manager, Janet Williams.
