Pembroke Probus Club members were welcomed by president Geoff Hounsome at their latest meeting.

Club business was swiftly and efficiently dealt with, including the proposed club visit to Tredegar House and the forthcoming club sports day at Heatherton.

After a short refreshment break, the speakers secretary, Philip Vanner, introduced the guest speaker for the meeting the Rev. Dr. Louise Hearne, assisted by her husband.

Dr. Hearne is a daughter of a traditional farming family from the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa.

In the post-Apartheid era the family farm was compulsory purchased by the Government for much less than its actual worth. However, they purchased another farm and continued farming.

Her family were members of the Dutch Reform Church and were not best pleased when she adopted the Baptist Church subsequent to her marriage, to Ian, after university.

Louise, an attractive young lady with a delightful South African accent, then took us on a voyage of discovery.

We were taken in the footsteps of St. Paul from present day Israel to Turkey. The scenery and the changes that confronted St. Paul, were described in words and displayed in the fascinating photographs of the natural and man-made landscapes.

At the same time, the underlying message of Easter was quietly, but effectively impressed on the listening Probus members.

It was rounded off by John Brock, who in giving the vote of thanks, emphasised how the journey, of St. Paul had been brought to life.
