Pembroke Ladies hockey team played their first game of this season in Division Four of the South Wales League against Carmarthen Ladies. This will be the first time that Pembroke have had to play their league games outside of Pembrokeshire due to the lack of senior teams in the county.
Both teams started brightly, with the Carmarthen goalkeeper making some excellent saves to keep Carmarthen level.
However, excellent play by Jessica Lawrence down the left flank resulted in Kathryn Hunter opening the scoring for Pembroke with an excellent finish.
This opening goal seemed to wake Pembroke up and from this point they totally controlled the game and could have increased their lead further with a bit more composure in front of goal.
Pembroke started the second half strongly and increased their lead further through Jessica Lawrence after good work by the midfield of Kate Roberts, Kathryn Hunter, Sarah Lunn, Jackie Cadogan and Libby Roberts.
Carmarthen never gave up, but the defence of Victoria Scourfield, Hayley Ferrier, Kirsty Smith, Jenny Cadagon and Laura Scott ensured that a clean sheet was kept.
The forward pairing of Jessica Lawrence and the ever-attacking Catherine Owen troubled the Carmarthen defence and resulted in Jess increasing the lead.
This was a good performance by the Pembroke squad, especially in the second half when the three E's were remembered by all on the pitch!
Pembroke travel to Bridgend tomorrow (Saturday) for what is sure to be a harder test for this squad.
Team: Victoria Scourfield (vice-captain), Hayley Ferrier, Brenda Scourfield, Kirsty Smith, Kate Robert, Jenny Cadogan, Libby Roberts, Sarah Lunn (captain), Kathryn Hunter, Jackie Cadogan, Jessica Lawrence, Catherine Owen, Laura Scott. Umpire - Julia Griffiths.
