A last reminder about Pembroke's first Apple Day tomorrow (Saturday). The event is being held in Foundry House and the Commons. It will be opened at 10 am by Peter Davies, the Wales Commissioner for Sustainable Development, and there will be activities and shopping all day until 4 pm. Tell your friends, or better still bring them - there is parking at Golden Grove School opposite.
Most importantly - Pembroke Can Make a Difference group will be inaugurating the Pembroke Community Apple Press to make fantastic juice. So bring your apples to be pressed and a container to take home the gorgeous juice or share it with others. The pommace (i.e. what is left once the apples are pressed) will be taken away by Woodland Pig to feed to their pigs! Amazing.
Hope to see you there - free entry, but lots to do and buy and, of course, the inevitable raffles with fantastic prizes - a ticket to see Paul Hollywood in Cardiff in November, one of his signed books, an apple/peeler corer thing.
The programme will include:
• Marquee market with local food and drink for sale.
• Fruit Tree Society of Wales selling fruit trees (as will Gwynfor Growers selling Welsh Heritage varieties) and giving advice in planting, grafting, growing apples. They will also be able to identify your home grown varieties if you bring along four ripe fruits, and will be giving a talk on apple ID.
• Murray Taylor and David Halstead will be giving a talk on the orchard they have planted out at Hundleton and their plans for making cider locally.
• Beth from Food at Williams will demonstrate cooking apples in all sorts of ways.
• The Pembroke Bread Club will demonstrate cooking apple breads.
• Tanyard will run a café with lovely homemade apple cakes.
• Outside Woodland Pig will be selling their amazing sausages with mash and onion and apple gravy.
• Tom Bean will be peeling apples - longest peel wins a prize - and cooking them into fantastic apple fritters on his rocket stove.
• Kids will be making apple things in Welsh and English and - if the weather is not too wet - running apple and spoon races and apple bobbing
• Musical entertainment will be provided by Fiddlebox.
• Recipes - interesting facts - myths - legends - and it's all about apples.
