Pembroke Dock Community School is pleased with the outcome of its recent Estyn inspection - with the report highlighting the school’s commitment to Children’s Rights and strong and sustained commitment to equity.
The inspection report praises Headteacher Michele Thomas’ determined and visionary leadership, characterised by high expectations for pupils’ learning and well-being, exceptional standards of writing, and its nurturing and inclusive environment.
This was a fitting tribute to the hard work of the staff team and dedicated leadership of Mrs Thomas who retires after over 15 years of service to the school.
The Estyn inspection report states that the school is an ‘inspiring and welcoming’ learning community.
At its core is a strong rights-respecting ethos that promotes fairness and a sense of belonging. The school’s notable commitment to equity ensures that staff celebrate the diverse backgrounds and meet the needs of pupils.
Pupils show empathy and treat others with respect. Leaders promote a clear, shared vision that unites staff, pupils, parents and the wider community.
As a lead school for Initial Teacher Education (ITE), leaders contribute significantly to developing new teachers, strengthening the school’s reflective and professional learning culture.
The school has embedded an inspiring curriculum that reflects pupils’ interests and the locality effectively.
A focus on professional development for staff to strengthen approaches to teaching writing has ensured that there are consistent and effective processes in place.
The school has only the one recommendation from Estyn, which is to address the high levels of persistent absenteeism. In Welsh schools, persistent absenteeism is defined as a pupil missing 10% or more of their required school sessions.
The governing body was recognised as being highly experienced and knowing the school and its community well.
Chair of Governors, Phil Bowen said: "We are immensely grateful to Mrs Thomas for her unwavering dedication over the years. The recent Estyn report is a testament to the leadership and culture she has fostered.
“She leaves behind a legacy of achievement, care, and resilience that will continue to shape the school for years to come.”
Pembrokeshire County Council leader and a member of the school’s Governing Body, Cllr Jon Harvey said: “A report of this nature does not come about by accident. It is testament of the efforts of pupils and staff, supported by the Governing Body and parents and carers.
“The strong and dedicated leadership of the Headteacher has contributed significantly to the inspection outcome and we will now work closely with the incoming Headteacher to ensure the future remains bright for Pembroke Dock Community School.”
Headteacher, Mrs Thomas said: "It has been a privilege and an honour to lead Pembroke Dock Community School. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and know that the school is in a strong position to continue its journey of success.
“I would like to thank the pupils, staff, governors, and parents for their support and commitment over the years. I wish Mrs Crockford Morris every success as the newly appointed headteacher from September."
