The Peloton Cycle Group completed their once in a lifetime adventure last month having cycled the length of France from Roscoff in the North to the Spanish border in the South in aid of local charities. The team was made up of 19 cyclists and six support Team members. Event organiser, Anthony Mattick, said: "I initially planned that some cyclists would cycle 120-miles a day for the five days and that the less proficient would cycle between 50 and 80-miles. "With the appaling weather, which only got worse as the trip went on, it became clear that even the best intended plans have to be changed. Cycling from 9.30 am each morning until about 6 or 7 pm in the evening for five days into strong winds and showers is no easy feet." The group endured the worst weather for the time of year since 1999 with gusting winds of up to 35 mph on day three which was not exactly conducive with riding a pedal cycle in the countryside. Anthony said that the group was tested both physically and mentally with such occurrences as getting lost several times a day due to the French road signs, having their lorry bumped in a fail to stop accident, several of the group being involved in a road traffic accident in a taxi, losing cyclists, cycling into The Pyrenees (unplanned), the return ferry from Santander crashing into a freak wave causing the group to have to drive back through the whole of France. In a nutshell, the group, which has an average age of 40-plus years, cycled 65-miles on day one, 88 on day two, 90 on day three, 100 on day four, and 75 on day five, climbing 3,100-feet into The Pyrenees. Collectively, they cycled over 7,500-miles and drove just over 6,000-miles. The event would not have been the success it was without the support of local businesses, organisations and individuals and the following are sincerely thanked for their assistance: F.B.
