Sir,

In answer to the letter and comments of Clr. Michael Williams in last week's issue of the Tenby Observer, I would like to put forward the facts regarding pedestrianisation.

The results of Pembrokeshire County Council's own survey were that: The majority of both businesses and residents within the town walls do not want the scheme that is being implemented this year.

Both majority views were: did not want it to start earlier in the day; did not want it to finish later in the day; did not want it to extend to two months.

To their question, 'instead of a pedestrianisation scheme the council should consider another way of improving the traffic situation', both majorities overwhelmingly supported this proposal. However, the traffic department of the county council did not like the answer and so they changed the word 'instead' to 'other additional ways' in their recommendations to the cabinet, therefore changing the meaning of both the question and subsequent answer.

The majority of the businesses also stated that fewer people visited their businesses as a result of the pedestrianisation scheme.

Caldey Island residents also concur with the majority views of the businesses and residents within the town walls.

The CRA also surveyed 50 businesses within the town walls and the majority were opposed to pedestrianisation.

The department of transport has stated that PCC is obliged under the regulations to hold a public enquiry. I await the decision by the county council as to whether they will hold such an enquiry, so that all opinions can be acknowledged; but as it is primarily the residents and businesses within the walled town and Caldey Island who are directly affected, their views should be the priority.
