PCSO from Pembroke will be spending the summer working with young people.

PCSO Kelly MacKay is undertaking a secondment with The Princes Trust - Cymru's Carmarthenshire Centre for six weeks from July 14.

She will be working with children and young people on the 'Get Started' programme through their Summer Club and Summer Camp projects; the theme of which is 'Taking Responsibility'.

She said: "I currently work very closely with all the local secondary and primary schools and feel I have built up a strong link and rapport with the children and teachers.

"When I saw the advert for the secondment with the Princes Trust I thought it would be an excellent opportunity for me to gain some valuable experience and knowledge within this field.

"I will be assisting a team leader from the Princes Trust, in enabling these young people to get involved in many different exercises, such as team building, acquiring new skills and abilities, and learning to put your trust into other people.

"Many of these children and young adults come from under-privileged backgrounds, they generally cannot get on in a school environment, and many of them have been in trouble with the police at some stage within their lives.

"This project is an opportunity for all the children to work towards achieving some goals and targets and assists them into adult life.

"I will be involved in various activities such as rock climbing, where the children will have to put their faith into the mentors and vice versa. I will have to be strong and take part in all the activities so I lead by example!

"I know my experience with the Princes Trust will be a great benefit to me and enable me to develop as an individual and I can bring what I learn back to the neighbourhood policing teams in Pembrokeshire.

"Working with these children and young adults, out of a police uniform, allows them to relax and feel comfortable in your presence. I am hoping that the children will be able to see that, although I have to wear a uniform and be authoritative, I do actually have a fun side and can be great company!" she concluded.
