Paul Morris has a simple goal - he intends to get more and more people out walking. He has just been appointed co-ordinator of a new project - Steps2Health - which aims to do just that. Paul, from Tenby, works from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority headquarters in Pembroke Dock. The authority is lead partner in the multi-agency project which is already looking to recruit volunteers to lead walks in some of the most beautiful parts of this area. Within 18 months, Steps2Health aims to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy fresh air, meet new people and improve their health by regular brisk walking in scenically special areas. The first pilot walks will be in Milford Haven, Neyland, Newport, Pembroke Dock and Tenby, with walks in other areas being added as the project develops. Anyone living in one of these areas who would like to be involved and lead walks can contact Paul for more details. Said Paul: "Walking is described as the ideal form of physical activity - it makes you feel good, reduces stress, helps you relax and sleep better. It is said that walking two miles per day can reduce the risk of heart attack by 28 per cent and you can lose weight as well. "Brisk walking has lots of benefits, like improving the functioning of the heart and lungs and reduces blood pressure." Steps2Health is part of the all-Wales Walking the Way to Health initiative and is led by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Other partners are Pembrokeshire County Council, Pembrokeshire Local Health Board, The National Public Health Service, PLANED, Llanion and Monkton Communities First Partnership and Pembrokeshire Access Group. Funding is provided by the British Heart Foundation and the Big Lottery Fund, under the umbrella of the Countryside Council for Wales. • Paul Morris is keen to hear from anyone interested in helping in the project. He can be contacted via 0845 345 7275 or by e-mail at [email protected]">[email protected]
