There was another wonderful turnout of walkers for the sixth 'Walk in the Park' around Llys-y-Fran reservoir last Sunday. Mr. Joseph Cuff, of Diabetes UK Cymru, Cardiff, sent the walkers on their way, and the countdown was recorded live on Radio Pembrokeshire as their 'Walk of the week'. The damp conditions did not deter the 100-plus walkers, who deserved every penny of sponsorship they raised as they trudged through some extremely muddy patches on the 6.5 mile route. The sponsorship pledged this year again has been over £2,000. Since this walk was first started six years ago, over £30,000 has been raised in Pembrokeshire, at this event. This event has now become so popular, walkers are out to beat their personal best times from previous years, while others enjoy a stroll around and a chat; it is a very social event, with refreshment points en route. This walk is part of a network of 67 walks throughout Britain. All the money raised at these walks goes to research projects. With diabetes being on the increase, and still millions of people who remain undiagnosed, these much-needed funds are essential to fund research projects already underway. The organisers of the event wish to thank: The Co- operative of Kilgetty, Somerfield of Tenby, and Tesco of Carmarthen and Pembroke Dock for providing squash and biscuits for the refreshment points wn route; Morris Bros, of Tenby, Huw Davies, of the Wimpy, Saundersfoot, who gave equipment to aid the smooth running of the event; and also Mike Worcester, of Stepaside Coachworks, for providing and driving the rescue vehicle. Thanks also to all who provided raffle prizes, and to all the walkers and supporters who helped to make the day a great success.

And they’re off! The walkers (and runners!) head off around Llys-y-Fran.
