The 18 members of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority were paid a total of £60,008 in basic and special responsibility allowances in the last financial year, compared with 15 members receiving a total of £47,568 in 2007/08.

Reimbursement of travelling, subsistence and other expense payments amounted to £9,047 for the same period, compared with £9,927 in 2007/08.                 

The allowances consist of a basic allowance payable to all members of £2,664 per year, and special responsibility allowances payable to the chairman of the authority (£5,156 p.a.), the vice-chairman (£2,578 p.a.), the chairman of the development management committee (£2,165 p.a.), the vice-chairman of the development management committee (£1,429p.a.), the chairman of performance review committee (£714 p.a.) and the vice-chairman of performance review committee (£470 p.a.), the chairman of personnel committee (£357 p.a.) and the vice-chairman of personnel committee (£236 p.a).

A member can only receive one special responsibility allowance, regardless of the number of positions of office they may hold with the authority, and all allowances are paid pro-rata to the term of appointment during the year.

In January 2008, the overall membership of the authority increased from 15 to 18 members. Mr. A. C. Luke, Mr. W. J. Roberts, Mr. S. Watkins, Mrs. R. Hayes, Mr. J. M. Griffiths and Clr. S. Perkins left the authority in May 2008.

In May 2008, Clr. R. Lewis, Clr. R. N. Hancock, Clr. C. J. Collins, Clr. J. L. Davies, Clr. W. I. Raymond and Clr. M. L. Evans joined the authority. Subsequently, Clr. Collins left in March 2009. Payments to Ms. C. M. Gwyther include arrears in respect of 2007/08.

The chairman's attendance was impacted as his authority duties required him to attend events, such as ANPA and WANPA conferences, which coincided with authority meetings.

Dr. Williams, who resides in Swansea, sustained a severe spinal injury and was unable to attend meetings for four months during the year.

Members attend other meetings on behalf of the authority for which their expenses are included in the travel and subsistence section.
