A local councillor has once again asked if there is the possibility of the town council funding a ‘park and ride’ service to be reinstated for Tenby.

Recently members of the town council pointed to the possibility of introducing a land train service over the summer period as a way to offset the loss of the park and ride provision from the North Beach car park, which has resulted in a loss of access to Tenby’s harbour area, particularly for disabled people and elderly visitors and residents.

The Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, stated that a ‘scoping exercise’ they had held had proved quite ‘exciting’ into exploring the possibilities of how a land train would work for the resort.

Clr. Mrs. Lane recently called for a review of the town’s pedestrianisation scheme, as many people who lived in Tenby and those who wanted to visit the resort who were elderly or suffered mobility problems seemed to be suffering due to the lack of a park and ride service.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter once again raised the matter of the park and ride from Butts Field car park being a big loss for the town.

“I know I keep harping on about this, but the park and ride service is so important for the town’s tourism and local people, and its ridiculous that we have had to forfeit this,” she told her colleagues.

“It’s so important to get people to the harbour, Castle Hill and the boats that leave for Caldey, not only that, but it provided a service for local people just to get into that area of the town during pedestrianisation,” she continued, asking if there was any chance the town council could fund such a service from the tourism budget.

The town clerk, Andrew Davies, said that it would all depend on what the cost was, and that there had been a suggestion that the park and ride could be reintroduced as a charged for service, and jointly funded by Pembrokeshire County Council and the town council.

Mr. Davies said that the last year that the service was run from Butts Field, 20,000 people had used the bus.

Clr. Mrs. Rossiter asked if they could press on with looking into the costings before the next summer season was upon them, with the Mayor agreeing that the town council should look into their options further.
