PIANO accordion wizard Paul Hutchinson is no stranger to Burnett’s Hill, having appeared at the historic Martletwy chapel in sell-out concerts featuring Hoover the Dog and Belshazzar’s Feast.

He returns next week in a new guise, as one half of jazz-folk duo Pagoda Project - the other half being clarinet virtuoso Karen Wimhurst of the Cauld Blast Orchestra.

“We formed the duo in 2014 to create a unique fusion of traditional folk tunes with jazz improvisations,” explained Paul. “We’ve evolved a warm and dynamic sound which people seem to like - our debut album was Songlines magazine world music album of the month and received five stars. Not even Bellowhead got that.”

As well as original tunes flavoured by Eastern European, Parisian café and South American influences, the duo are also well known for their often surreal sense of humour; for example, they have a theory that the tango originated in Twickenham.

Pagoda Project are coming to Burnett’s Hill as part of tour of selected venues around Britain.

“I’ve always loved playing in the chapel and I’m delighted to be returning there with this new musical project,” added Paul.

The concert is on Wednesday, July 26, at 7.30 pm. Tickets are available from 01646 651725.
