After failing to win either of their festive games, Whitland were back on the road last Saturday, when they made the long journey to face Fleur De Lys, and eventually their superior forward power and all-round fitness took them to victory by 25 points to 17. Whitland suffered a blow in the morning when they lost second row Raff Williams through flu, with Andrew Morillo stepping into the boilerhouse. Outside-half Aled Davies was also well under par due to illness. The Borderers started brightly and after 11 minutes, following a break by Lee Glanville, Andrew Jenkins put in a good grubber kick to the corner, where good pressure by the chasing pack resulted in a poor clearance kick, giving Whitland a lineout some eight metres out. A good take by Carwyn Davies saw the pack driving in field, led by prop Alun Davies, and quick hands by the backs eventually resulted in winger Will Davies going over for an unconverted try in the corner. Fleur hit back midway through the half with two tries of their own, by scrum-half Darryl Cook, both converted by outside-half Brett Green. Late in the half, Whitand's scrummaging power came to the fore and with the eight about to push Fleur over their own line, a penalty try was awarded, which Aled Davies converted, to leave the interval score 14 -12 to the home side. Early in the second half, Green added a penalty for Fleur, before Whitland levelled the score with another unconverted try by winger Will Davies. Whitland took the lead mid-way through the half with an Aled Davies penalty, before making the game safe with an unconverted try in the corner by prop Romeo Colella, after fine work by Lee Glanville and flanker John Bowen. This made the final score 25-17 to Whitland. Tomorrow (Saturday), Whitland take on premiership opposition in the fourth round of the Konica Minolta Welsh Cup, when Cross Keys are the visitors to Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn, with a 2.30 pm kick-off. Team fielded: Lee Glanville, Carwyn Thomas, Gary Evans, Barry John, Will Davies (Dion Thomas), Aled Davies, Andrew Jenkins, Alun Davies (Gareth Williams), Aled Harris, Richard Smith (Romeo Colella), Carwyn Davies (Ryan Michael), Andrew Morillo, John Bowen, Simon James, Randall Williams, capt.
