Sir,
My compliments to Mr. Calver (Observer, March 29) for having the courage to introduce some long overdue objectivity to the debate about the relocation of the civic amenity site to land near Brooklands.
I know that officers of the PCC have been trying to identify a new site to replace the existing facility at The Salterns for more than six years and have examined many potential sites.
Although the Brooklands Relatives Support Group and the proprietors of the establishment have orchestrated a well-managed protest action, they have yet to raise any really valid objection to the proposal nor have they offered any viable alternative.
I know that Mr. Hallett suggested a site on the Devonshire Drive, but as a former resident of that area, he knew full well that a site there would only be possible after expensive and extensive road improvements, as the current single lane road would not carry the size and volume of traffic involved.
I concede that during the construction period the proposed site might be an eyesore but, after completion and professional landscaping, the sign at the entrance would be the only visible indication of its existence.
I concede that some people could genuinely have an initial and emotional reaction to the proposal, but a more objective consideration would show that the proposed site is no closer to the Brooklands facility than The Salterns Caravan Site and parts of Newell Hill are to the existing site and I am not aware of any vocal campaign of objections from residents of those areas. Indeed, the proposed landscaping of the proposed site would probably protect and enhance the tranquility of the garden area of Brooklands.
We do require a new civic amenity site for the Tenby area and currently the proposed site is the most viable available. If someone can suggest a viable alternative, then please speak up or forever hold your peace.
John H. T. Griffiths,
Tenby.
