Residents and businesses in Pembrokeshire are being asked for their ideas on how local waste should be disposed of in the future.

Their views will be considered as part of a draft Regional Waste Plan, which will set out the agenda for managing waste over the next 20 years.

The 10-week consultation is entitled 'Our Waste, Our Challenge' and has been launched in Pembrokeshire and across the rest of Wales this week. It is being undertaken by Hyder Consulting and there are three draft plans for Wales - for the South West, South East, and the North.

The key aims of the new Regional Waste Plans are to identify the most appropriate approaches for managing Wales' waste. The approaches proposed include new recycling, composting and residual (the waste left over after we have recycled and composted) waste treatment facilities.

A consultation document which provides background information and details the options for each region has been produced. It includes a survey which the public is invited to complete.

The consultation exercise also includes the organisation of community group meetings which will be held across the regions, public focus groups and strategic stakeholder meetings so that people can have their say.

Clr. Huw George, cabinet member for environment, planning, and regulatory services, encouraged members of the public to get involved, ask questions and give their views on current and future plans.

"This will help us to identify the most suitable approach for managing the waste we produce, and the most suitable locations for new facilities," he said.

Following the consultation period, all information received will be analysed and the three regions of Wales will work together to produce revised and updated Regional Waste Plans by March 2008.
