Narberth 45 pts. Bonymaen 3

For the second week in succession, the Otters built up an unassailable lead in the second half with the hard work being done by the pack in the first half.

Initially, the ascent to get on top was imperceptible, but the impact grew gradually and resulted in some thrilling running by the Narberth backs.

The problems for Bonymaen were compounded by the fact that place kicker, outside-half Richard Williams, had an off day and was only successful once from six penalty attempts.

In sharp contrast, his opposite number Aled Davies converted four out of five attempts.

Admittedly Williams did have the misfortune to hit the posts with one of his first half penalty attempts and was unsuccessful with all but one penalty kick which was on target in injury time.

The same misfortune befell him in the second half when he hit the upright with a penalty kick after eight minutes and fluffed another chance three minutes later.

Aled Davies slotted over two penalty kicks in the first 25 minutes and in injury time, flanker Wayne Williams went over the line for a try after a combined move between the Narberth backs and pack from a scrum near the Bonymaen line.

Aled Davies converted the try and increased the lead in the second half with two penalty kicks in the first 20 minutes before the try scoring spree started.

It commenced in the finest way possible with an outstanding try by fullback Roger Davies.

He received a pass inside his own half and managed to weave and step his way past five or six defenders before going over for a try near the posts converted by Aled Davies.

There were a number of stoppages for injuries, with two players being stretchered off, one from each side.

When play was possible, Adrian Killa extended the Narberth lead when he came on as replacement midway through the second half for Andrew Davies. It was the result of more defence splitting running by the Narberth threequarters and Roger Davies added the points for the conversion.

Roger Davies also converted a try scored by his brother Richard, the centre, but was unable to convert the final try scored by Wayne Williams to cap a fine performance by Williams and the rest of his colleagues in the Narberth team.

For threequarters of the game, the Otters had found it difficult to break through the Maen resistance, but eventually it crumbled to open the floodgates in the closing stages.

It gave Narberth a bonus point win to hold on to a top-of-the-table spot in the Division One West League table.

Naturally over the moon with the result, Narberth director of rugby Jonathan Dodd said: "As at Llangennech last week, we didn't play particularly well in the first half, which was rather a scrappy affair.

"In contrast, as coaches we were very pleased with the second half performance and to gain a bonus point win.

"Bonymaen were difficult to break down, but when we did so, we made it tell in the last 20 minutes.

"Flanker Wayne Williams was excellent, with fullback Roger Davies and outside-half Aled Davies also playing well and we managed to pick the tempo up in the second half.

"We seem to have the right mix of players now in a very good squad, but we have not yet realised our full potential."

Balcony Suite match sponsors, Lucy Jones Racing, and Otters Holt match sponsors, NASUWT, selected Narberth flanker Wayne Williams as the man-of-the-match.
