Bonymaen 18 Narberth 29
Narberth produced some scintillating rugby to overcome the challenge of Bonymaen and maintain their recent winning sequence in Wednesday evening's floodlight match. Bony had wind advantage in the first half and opened the scoring after 10 minutes, when outside-half Anthony Evans made the most of a defensive error by the Otters, to hack the ball on and win the race for the touchdown in the right corner. Gareth James was off target with a penalty attempt against the wind for Narberth, who were forced to defend for considerable periods of the first half, as the Bony backs used the wind to their advantage with some astute kicking. However, the Otters looked sharper behind the pack, and produced two gems to first equalise and then take the lead with superb individualistic tries by scrum-half Adrian Killa and winger Richard Rees. Both were run in from inside the Narberth half, the first from a scrum by Killa and the second from a counter-attack by Rees who crossed under the posts for a try converted by Gareth James. Shortly before the interval, Anthony Evans reduced the lead with a penalty for Bony, who suffered a body blow on the stroke of half-time, when substitute flanker Dai Hills received his marching orders from referee David Williams after an apparent stamping incident. After 10 minutes of the second half, following a period of pressure by the Otters, flanker Rob McKusker broke through the Bony defence to run in from the 22 for a try. It was converted by James, who also converted a try from a similar move scored by captain and prop Alan Phillips two minutes later. A smartly taken drop goal by Gareth James extended the lead for the visitors and put the game out of reach of Bony, who put in a spirited display against the wind and with a player short. They showed their determination to score two unconverted tries by substitute scrum-half Graham Alexander and former Bath and Neath prop Leighton Gerrard. It was a good all round display by the Otters, who maintained their recent improvement with a committed display, much appreciated by the travelling band of supporters. Narberth fielded: Sion Brace, Richard Rees, Elgan Vittle, Andrew Bowen, Nick Jones, Gareth James, Adrian Killa (Gareth Mason), Barry Davies (Nathan Williams), Kevin Allen, Alan Phillips, capt. (Fifitapuku Faletau), David Ebsworth, Emori Katalau, Rob McKusker, Gary Denver and Lewis Wood (Gareth Bennett).
