Although the one point they picked up in this drawn game at the Recreation Ground was enough to seal promotion to National League division one for the Otters, it also meant it would be another week at least before the division two title issue is finally settled.
Although they did not know it at the time, with fellow championship candidates Rhymney and Tredegar both losing, runaway leaders Narberth only needed the three points from this game against Brynmawr to claim the crown.
They looked well placed for victory, going into the break 17 points to nil in front, but the homesters fought back after the change around to sneak a draw and leave the Otters still needing one win to take the title.
Although Narberth beat Brynmawr when they visited the Lewis Lloyd ground earlier in the season, memories of last year must have been just as sharp for the Otters' faithful who made the journey east, for it was defeat at the hands of Bryn late on in the season that doomed Narberth to another year in division two.
Ahead of the field by at least nine points, Narberth were still rather tentative in the opening stages as both teams tested each other to the full.
Acting skipper Simon Daniel played his part at pivot as he used his big boot to get the Otters out of gaol on several occasions during the opening quarter.
The stand-off had less success with his place kicking, missing a penalty early on, while former Swansea fly-half Phil Withers was also off-target with two similar strikes for the homesters.
Narberth eventually opened the scoring on the half-hour when prop Fifitapuku Faletau bulldozed his way through from a lineout to the give centre Elgan Vittles the space he needed to cut through and touch down.
Daniel converted and then landed a penalty to increase the visitors' advantage.
The last 10 minutes before the break certainly proved a purple patch for the Otters, for they edged yet further ahead when lock Emori Katalau drove on from a lineout before sending Daniel over for a touchdown.
Daniel converted his own try, but was off target with another penalty just before the interval to leave the visitors 17-0 ahead.
Bryn quickly countered from a Narberth attack just after the change around, with the threes and pack combining to send lock Rhys Bowen over for a try which Withers converted.
Bryn were reduced to 14 men when prop Steve Coles was yellow carded, but the Otters were unable to make their numerical superiority count.
It fact, as tends to be the case, it was Bryn who stepped up a gear to compensate for the missing man.
Narberth fullback Aled Davies and wing John Whitticombe combined to run possession out of defence, but left wing Rowland Nicklin intercepted as the Otters tried to off-load at the breakdown and raced through the strung out Narberth defences to touch down and Withers converted.
Nicklin almost picked up his second, but was denied when his chip over fullback Davies bounced into touch.
Although missing the stability of skipper Simon Davies and scrum-half Chris Macdonald, ever resourceful back row man Alan Reynolds rallied the Otters' defence as the homesters started to gain control of the set-pieces late on.
Narberth suffered a blow midway through the second half when Daniel was injured, with Tevita Manesitava coming on in the centre for Vittle to take over the stand-off berth.
Daniel's place-kicking prowess was sorely missed, for although fullback Davies tried to fill the fly-half's boots, he was off target with two penalties in quick succession.
Withers had more success at the other end, putting the teams back on terms with another penalty.
Narberth had a chance to snatch victory in the final minute when Vittle broke through but, instead of off-loading to Andrew Jones on his left, he opted to strike out for the line on his own and was held up short.
It left the Otters contemplating what could have been, but one more win from their three remaining matches will still be enough for them to seal the silverware and they could wrap it up tomorrow (Saturday) when they enjoy home advantage over Oakdale.
Narberth fielded: Aled Davies, John Whitticombe, Elgan Vittle, Andrew Bowen, Andrew Jones, Simon Daniel, Ryan Williams, Fifitapuku Faletau, Dewi Williams, Alan Phillips, Jamie Bohata, Emori Katalau, Alan Reynolds, John Bowen, Gareth Bennett.
