Narberth 20 pts. Bonymaen 13
Forget the 20-13 scoreline. The try count ratio of four to one gives a more accurate reflection of this match, which the Otters dominated from start to finish.
Persistent pressure during the opening 15 minutes paid dividends when winger Tom Bonnell did well to finish a movement after winger Nick Jones had looped around from the left to give Bonnell a flat try-scoring pass.
In difficult kicking conditions, Aled Davies was unable to convert.
However, after 25 minutes, Davies did get his name on the score sheet with a quite outstanding try. He received the ball just outside the Bonymaen 22 and jinked, danced and bulldozed his way across the line in the left corner for another unconverted try.
In the closing stages of the first half, Tom Bonnell picked up his second try of the match when he won the race to the touchdown in the right corner as he followed up a well-judged kick ahead by centre Steve Martin. Once again, no points came from the conversion attempt.
At the start of the second half, Narberth outside-half Aled Davies tried an ambitious penalty kick from 40 metres, which was not successful.
Five minutes later, Maen full-back Rob Townsend had a penalty opportunity inside the Narberth 22 which he grasped to reduce the deficit.
A minute later, the Narberth lead was cut to 10 points when winger Richard Williams followed up a kick ahead to cross in the left corner for a try converted by Rob Townsend.
Seven minutes later, excellent work by the Otters' pack resulted in a pushover try for number eight Jamie Bohata to restore the 10 points advantage.
The fourth unconverted try put the game beyond the visitors, although the Narberth lead was cut again by an injury time smartly taken drop goal by Maen number 10 Richard Cunniffe.
The Narberth forwards coach commented after the match: "It was a good win and well deserved. Although Bonymaen battled hard and defended well, the scoreline was not a true reflection of the game. We were always in control and came away with a bonus point. We might have been slightly disappointed as coaches at the way we played as we did not put Bonymaen under the cosh. However, the pitch was very muddy and we were quite happy with the result.
"The pack played well, both in the scrum and in the lineout, where Alex Jenkins pinched a lot of ball off Bonymaen and number eight Jamie Bohata was effective as a ball carrier.
"Aled Davies at outside-half made sure that the backs played in the right area, especially in the first half and, although we did not up the tempo in the second half, a lot of that was due to the pitch.
"Centre Neil Davies also had an excellent game.
"Admittedly there is always room for improvement, but we are on the right track and, having won the last two league games, we are looking forward to the home game against Dunvant next Saturday.
"During November, most of the Narberth players had some competitive rugby. We played a friendly away fixture at UWIC, some of the players had a game for a Crawshays' team at Monmouth School and a number of the younger players represented the Welsh Amateur side in an international match against Germany in Berlin.
"Consequently, the players were not that rusty and it showed, especially in the opening stages of the match when we were on top most of the time before taking an early lead through Tom Bonnell."
Narberth fullback Richard Davies was nominated as man-of-the-match by the match sponsors, Alexander Partnership, Chartered Accountants, who were sponsoring the match with Hains and Lewis Solicitors.
The match ball was sponsored by the Landshipping Boys, Ray and Carol Barrett, The Romp Babes and N and B Concrete.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Narberth have their second home game on the trot in the first of this season's return league fixtures when Dunvant will play at the Lewis Lloyd ground.
Narberth fielded: Richard Davies, Tom Bonnell (Jonathan Morgan), Steve Martin, Neil Davies, Nick Jones, Aled Davies, Adrian Killa (Andrew Davies), Ryan Perrott, Dan Smith, Justin Hughes captain (Tom Slater), David Ebsworth (Jason Jennings), Alex Jenkins, Jim Kaumahotoya (Thabani Sangwani), Andrew Dennis and Jamie Bohata.
