Following the midweek euphoria after the local derby win over Whitland, the Otters came back to earth with a bump at Maesteg on Saturday.

It was a most disappointing display by the Otters, who lacked continuity and made too many mistakes against such a well-drilled side as the Old Parish.

All of the Maesteg players live within eight miles of the ground and the return of Allan Bateman to his old stamping ground, has given the Llynfi Valley Outfit a real boost and on Saturday's form Maesteg will be bidding for promotion.

After 30 minutes of the first half the visitors had conceded 24 points following well worked tries by prop Steve Tremlett, centre Allan Bateman and Karl Hocking, each of which was converted by the reliable boot of outside-half Mark David who also added a penalty.

Both Bateman and Hocking achieved a personal milestones as it was Bateman's first try for the club after a gap of 15 years and Hocking picked up the 99th try of his league career.

The Otters fought back with a try by flanker Meurig Daniel after Katilimoni Tuipulotu had taken a quick tapped penalty. Simon Daniel converted, but on the stroke of half-time Maesteg restored the 24 points advantage when Grant Epton picked up a dropped pass inside his own half to outpace the covering defence for an excellent try again converted by Mark David.

The Otters played with more commitment and purpose in the second half, and the arrival of Chris Macdonald gave the visitors more of a cutting edge in attack, as well as bolstering the defence after the Old Parish had added two converted tries.

The first try was scored by flanker Mathew Wareham from broken play and the second by Mark David, after a breakaway initiated by winger Grant Epton from the Maesteg line. From a scrum near the Maesteg line, Macdonald powered over for a try after being fed by substitute number eight Gareth Bennett and Simon Daniel added the two points for a conversion.

The Old Parish notched up their 50th point following an unconverted try by full-back Neil Dixon who had an excellent game for the Maesteg team.

On the day, the Old Parish had the bounce of the ball and the rub of the green, but they deserve full credit for converting half chances into points and capitalising on mistakes made by the Otters.

Clearly the demands of their local derby against Whitland three days earlier had taken something out of the Narberth players who will need to lift their game tomorrow (Saturday) at Tredegar. The supporters' bus leaves the clubhouse at 12 noon.

Narberth fielded: Nick Jones (Gareth James), Daniel Gravell, Deiniol Evans, Elgan Vittle, Andrew Jones, Simon Daniel, Adrian Killa (Chris Macdonald), Shannon Guy, Simon Delaney (Kevin Allen), Alan Phillips, (Barry Davies) Jamie Bohata (David Ebsworth), Jason Jennings, Meurig Daniel, Katilimoni Tuipulotu (Simon Davies) and Mathew Evans (Gareth Bennett).
