Narberth 42 pts Bridgend Ath. 22

The Otters shrugged off the shackles which had restrained them the previous week at Whitland to produce some exhilarating rugby at home to Bridgend Athletic to notch up five tries and a bonus point win.

Narberth scored some dazzling tries and Athletic play a similar brand of rugby, so it was an entertaining game for all spectators.

Narberth supporters did not have to wait long for the first score as an interception by Lee Glanville after four minutes produced an exciting try converted by outside-half Aled Davies.

Athletic centre Stuart Morris clawed three points back with a penalty, before Aled Davies finished off a pick up and drive move by the pack, taken on by some good hands by the backs, and Davies broke the last resistance with a jinking run to produce a try which he converted himself.

A drop-goal attempt by Aled Davies after 20 minutes hit the posts, but a minute or two later, Davies was on target with a penalty kick to increase the lead.

A drop-goal by Aled Davies after 35 minutes increased the lead again, before Athletic conjured a try out of nothing for centre Rob Coles to score after following up a kick ahead. Stuart Morris added the conversion.

Five minutes into the second half, a great individual effort by fullback Roger Davies increased the lead again with an unconverted try and after 60 minutes, Aled Davies ghosted through the Bridgend Athletic defence with a weaving run to score a try which he also converted.

Bridgend Athletic fought back with a try by scrum-half Aled Thomas from a tap-penalty which was converted by Stuart Morris, but a huge drop-goal from Roger Davies from 40 metres out broke the back of any remaining Athletic resistance.

Narberth winger Tom Bonnell finished off a superb break by replacement outside-half Craig Jones with a try converted by Roger Davies and in injury time, Rob Coles picked up his second try for the visitors, which Stuart Morris was unable to convert.

Beaming after the match, head coach Sean Gale said: "After last week's major disappointment, the whole team played excellent rugby.

"What we as management had questioned was our passion and will to win. In all fairness, the whole team, including the replacements, answered that question.

"Bridgend Athletic are a good side who defended very well, kept their structure and when they had the ball they looked very good. However, we had the lion's share of possession and we made the most of it.

"The players went out to prove a point. The set-piece was excellent, prop Tom Slater carried the ball well, along with back row forwards Gareth Batman, Jim Kaumahotoya and Wayne Williams, and as they went forward all the time, it made it easier for the backs.

"A key factor in our game was the speed with which scrum-half Andrew Davies got to the breakdown to release a lot of quick ball and put Bridgend Athletic on the back foot.

"Steve Martin did very well on the wing and came looking for work and as ever, fullback Roger Davies looked very dangerous.

"All in all, as management we were very pleased with the performance and the result."
