Pembrokeshire's popular kerbside recycling scheme is being rolled out to a further 15,500 local homes over the next few weeks. Householders in Tenby, Saundersfoot and over 30 other communities will be given orange bags, in which they can put their recyclable waste. The orange bags will be picked up once a week by Pembrokeshire County Council, on the same day as they pick up normal black-bag refuse. "The new areas taking part in our kerbside recycling scheme include Tenby, Saundersfoot, Caldey Island, Lamphey, Narberth, Templeton, Angle, Cosheston, Carew, Llandissilio, and St. Ishmaels," said Clr. Huw George, cabinet member for the environment, planning and regulatory services. Detailed information and orange bags are currently being delivered to households, with the date of their first collection. The items which people CAN put in the orange bags are: all sorts of paper, including newspapers and magazines; plastic bottles; clean food and drink cans and tins; aluminium foil; cardboard, directories and catalogues. The bags will be taken to a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) near Haverfordwest where the items will be sorted and sent to different places to be recycled. The scheme already operates in mid- Pembrokeshire, with around 24,000 households taking part. By June, around 39,500 households in the county will be included in the scheme. This equates to 70 per cent of properties in Pembrokeshire. Clr. George said the council is aiming to further extend the initiative subject to finance. "We are aware of the enthusiasm for recycling that exists in many communities that we have not yet reached, and are hoping to extend the scheme to include them as quickly as possible," he said.
