Anne Hermione JEWSON

(née Barclay)

Ludchurch

The funeral took place on January 15 at St. James Church, Manorbier, of Anne Jewson, who passed away peacefully on January 4 after a long illness borne with great courage and dignity.

Anne spent most of her life in Pembrokeshire. Born in Manorbier, she later moved to Elm Grove, St. Florence, with her family and lived there for the next 27 years.

She married Captain Peter Jewson whilst he was on a posting to Woomera, Australia, in 1958, and they remained there for the births of their two children, Simon and Sarah.

The family then spent time in Germany, before returning to Pembrokeshire when Peter was posted to Penally.

When Peter (now a major) retired a few years later, they bought Penally Abbey and ran a thriving hotel business, before eventually moving back to Anne's childhood village of St. Florence where they lived at Copybush Farm.

Simon and Sarah both remained close to Anne throughout her life, bringing up their families in the county.

She had close relationships with her four grandchildren, Catherine, Claire, Thomas and William, and supported them in their many activities, particularly as each pursued, to varying degrees, her own great love of horseriding.

Anne rode, hunted with the Pembrokeshire and South Pembrokeshire Hunt and was very active in showing at both county and national level.

She founded and ran the Tenby Show for many years, was District Commissioner for the South Pembrokeshire Pony Club, which she helped to found, and organised winter qualifiers for the British Show Pony Society Winter Championships.

Her dream, that one of her grandchildren would ride at The Horse of the Year Show was fulfilled through her youngest grandchild, William, who qualified and rode there just last year.

Severely unwell as she was, Anne was there to cheer him on. Indeed, in later years, she could often be seen at shows in her wheelchair, cheering at the ringside as her daughter, herself an accomplished pony breeder and producer, steered the grandchildren to many riding successes.

Anne's brother, Ian, moved to Southern Rhodesia to farm as a young man. Despite living so far apart, Anne and her brother maintained close contact and they visited each other whenever possible.

Ian, who now lives in South Africa, sent a eulogy to be read at Anne's funeral as his health did not allow him to attend in person. He was represented by his youngest son Robert.

The eulogy was read by Anne's dear cousin, John Thomas-Ferrand.

Anne's grandchildren bravely contributed to the service with a short eulogy of their own written and delivered by Claire and a song, sung and played by Catherine.

Canon Michael Butler and Father Paul kindly officiated at the service and funeral arrangements were expertly carried out by W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., of Tenby and Narberth.

There were family flowers only, but donations in lieu for St. Florence and Manorbier Churches or BSPS Wales, may be sent to Liz Jewson, 5 Westerton Court, Ludchurch.

MRS. E. M. PROUT

(nee Rowe)

Tenby

The funeral takes place today (Friday) at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, of Ethel May Prout, of 20 Harries Street, Tenby - the house in which she was born in 1918.

The widow of Leslie Prout, who was originally from Saundersfoot, she was formerly Ethel Rowe and older readers may remember her hairdressing salon in High Street, Tenby, 'Miss Rowe's.' Leslie joined her in the business, and later the pair were associated with the St. Catherine's Hotel near the harbour, and with the Gayhart Cafe in Haverfordwest.

The bulk of Ethel's long life, however, was spent in Tenby, in 20 Harris Street, which was a family home built by her grandfather, George Rowe. The well-known photograph of the trawling ketch 'Annie', M26, in Tenby Harbour, is a reminder of the Rowe connection with Tenby, for George Rowe owned the ketch, and there are family stories of narrow escapes whilst fishing, including him nearly losing his life on Goscar Rock.

Ethel and Leslie were not blessed with children, but they kept up with their numerous siblings and their families, who include Ethel Rees (nee Prout), wife of Canon Richard Rees, who is to conduct today's funeral service, which will be held at 1.45 pm.

Ethel's ashes are to be later interred in the Garden of Remembrance at St. Mary's, Tenby, alongside Leslie's.

She will be missed by her remaining friends and neighbours, by Pat, Liz and George, daughters of her late brother, William George Rowe, and by Albert, Ethel, Diane and Mim and other members of her late husband's family.

Funeral arrangements are being carried out by W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, tel. 843160, or Landsker House, 21 Station Road, Narberth, tel. 861300.
