Mr A. Colwyn Evans
Kilgetty
Mr Albert Colwyn Evans, of 4 Cotswold Gardens, Kilgetty, passed away peacefully, but unexpectedly, on Wednesday, July 1, in his 88th year at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, after a prolonged stay in both Morriston Hospital, Swansea, and Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.
Having been born at the Marsh Cottage, Begelly, and moving to Bramble Hill at the age of eight, he spent much of his life farming at Bramble Hill, Templeton, before moving to their bungalow at Glen-View, Thomas Chapel, later in his working life.
Finally moving to 4 Cotswold Gardens, Kilgetty, where he and his wife spent 15 happy years in retirement. Here he had more time to spend on all aspects of gardening which had always been his hobby and he really was a wonderful gardener, exhibiting and even judging (when not able to exhibit through failing health) at Kilgetty Gardening Club. He had always enjoyed attending local agricultural shows, moreso during retirement, often exhibiting his produce.
Colwyn had more time to devote to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren once he and Win had retired to Cotswold Gardens, and they were all a source of great comfort to him during his illnesses. They all referred to him as 'Pappy.'
After leaving Begelly school at 14, Colwyn's early years at Bramble Hill were spent following in family tradition working the land with horses.
Later, Colwyn specialised in a pedigree Friesian herd with dairy and general farming. Since his own farm did not take up all of his time, he helped neighbouring farmers by doing contract work, namely haymaking and tractor work. He used his own implements and worked long hours in the summers while the weather was good.
During the war, unable to serve his country because of his farming life, he was a member of the Home Guard based at Saundersfoot.
Colwyn's main interest was his farming, but this was curtailed every Sunday to make way for another love - Templeton Congregational Chapel, which he attended faithfully from the age of three until the change over to the United Reformed Church in recent years. He had been a member, then a deacon and trustee since early life, serving as treasurer for over 20 years, when he forged a true friendship with Rev. Elwyn John, who conducted Colwyn's moving funeral service at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on Thursday, July 9. The crematorium was filled to capacity and beyond where friends and relations had gathered to pay their last respects to a well-loved and well- respected gentleman.
He leaves to mourn Win (wife), to whom he had been married for 62-and-a-half years; Doris and William, Meryl and David (daughters and sons-in-law); Andrew and Tracey (grandson and partner), Nicky and Julian (grand-daughter and husband), Lee and Ana (grandson and wife), Alison and Richard (grand-daughter and partner); Nathan, Ryan, Jay, Luca, Hayley and Luke (great-grandchildren); Margaret and Glyn (sister and brother-in-law); Emrys and Heulwen (brother and sister-in-law), along with nephews, nieces, cousins, great-nephews, great-nieces and friends, being far too many to name. Emrys (brother) was unable to attend due to illness, as were Lawrence (nephew) and some close friends.
Bearers, who carried Colwyn shoulder high, were his grandsons, Andrew James, Lee Rogers and Julian Rees, Peter John and John Phillips, (close friends of Colwyn), and family member, Richard Bowen.
A book of remembrance was signed by many attending the funeral (thanks to David Belt and Michael Bowen). Over 30 bouquets of flowers, plus gifts of cakes, etc (too numerous to list by name) were received by the family, who are very grateful for everyone's kindness and support.
Immediate family flowers only were a large wreath of white mixed flowers from Win; Doris and William, Meryl and David; Andrew and Tracey, Nicky and Julian, Lee and Ana, Alison and Richard; along with a spray of red carnations (one from each of the great-grandchildren), Nathan, Ryan, Jay, Luca, Hayley and Luke.
At the request of the family, who were carrying out Colwyn's wishes, there were no donations or other flowers, as he had personally designated various charities prior to his passing.
Funeral arrangements were compassionately and professionally conducted by Mr. Stewart Treharne, of E. C. Thomas and Son, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside.
