Mr. R. A. Harries

Narberth

There was an extremely large gathering at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on January 9, as family, friends and former work colleagues gathered to celebrate the life of Mr. Roderick Alan Harries, of Station Approach, Narberth, who passed away at Withybush Hospital on Christmas Eve.

Alan was born at Hares Steps, Reynalton, one of the four children (two of whom died in infancy), of the late Jimmy and Nellie Harries.

As a young child, he moved to Elm House, Templeton, and was educated at the village school and Narberth Grammar School.

Along with his parents and brother John, he attended Templeton United Reformed Church where his father was a deacon.

A talented musician who played the piano, accordian and church organ, he frequently played in the local church and in local dance bands.

On leaving school, Alan served an apprenticeship with Penn Radio, before joining the Electricity Board in Tenby.

He later worked for the Ministry of Defence at Pendine, from where he retired 11 years ago. A number of his former work colleagues helped swell the large congregation.

Alan had a keen interest in sport. A gifted rugby player, he played for Tenby and Narberth and after his own playing days were over, maintained a passion for 'the Otters', as a committee member, assistant secretary, first aider and in more recent years as a ceaseless fund-raiser for the supporters club with his wife Gill.

As a mark of respect, the flag flew at half mast over Narberth Rugby Club until after the funeral and a minute's silence was observed at the club's Boxing Day fixture.

Following their marriage, Alan and Gill built their home in Station Approach, where they soon became respected members of the community. Alan was a keen gardener who frequently beat off stiff competition in the town's Civic Week gardening competition for his much admired front garden.

He also enjoyed sailing radio controlled boats and could often be found at the Mill Pond, Carew, on Sunday afternoons.

A devoted family man, he was never happier than when surrounded by his wife, sons Paul and Owain, daughters-in-law Margaret and Rachel, and six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Christopher, Katie, Rhys, Sian and Charlotte.

The service at Parc Gwyn was conducted by the Rev. Elwyn John and the organist was Jill Williams.

The bearers were: Messrs. Eddie Mutch, Carl Povey, Viv Edwards and Peter Morris.

The chief mourners were: Mrs. Gillian Harries (wife); Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harries (son and daughter-in-law); Mr. and Mrs. Owain Harries (son and daughter-in-law); Elizabeth, Christopher, Katie, Rhys, Sian and Charlotte (grandchildren); Mrs. Gillian Clancy and Mr. Michael Clancy (niece and nephew); Mr. and Mrs. Peter Badham (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); Miss Philippa Badham and Mr. Martin Badham (niece and nephew), together with many relatives and friends.

Unfortunately, Mr. John Harries and Mrs. Doreen Harries, Templeton (brother and sister-in-law) were unable to attend due to ill health.

There were family flowers only by request, but donations in lieu, if desired, for the Paul Sartori Foundation and Air Ambulance, may be sent to the funeral directors, Messrs. W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., Landsker House, 21 Station Road, Narberth.
