Mrs. M. THOMAS

Northern Ireland

(formerly of Saundersfoot)

As reported in our last issue, on October 29, a former resident of Saundersfoot, Mrs. Marian Thomas, passed away, aged 80, in her adopted home of Northern Ireland.

Marian was well-known around Pembrokeshire and more specifically Tenby and Saundersfoot as a farmer, a florist and a security officer.

Having been too young to engage in military service in World War II, following jobs as a post office assistant and a pharmacist's assistant, Marian joined the Women's Land Army in 1945.

A city girl, she left the Potteries in Stoke-on-Trent and worked in various parts of the country, finally being posted to Pembrokeshire where she was demobbed in 1948.

An active member and leader of the Tenby Young Farmers' Club, she married a local farmer and together they built up a series of successful dairy farms.

On her divorce, she left farming behind after 30 years and re-invented herself.

For a few years, she became well-known in the district for managing a florists in Saundersfoot.

In the final years of her working life, she worked as a security officer for Woolworths covering West and South Wales.

On her retirement, she moved to Northern Ireland to live with her only family.

She lived there, happily gardening and caring for pets, for 22 years, until her recent death, which took place on the same day and date 33 years after her own mother, who is buried in St. Issell's.

She is survived by her only daughter, Patricia Ann Wilson, and adored grandchildren Simon and Hazel.
