The funeral took place recently of Mrs. Clarice Lilian Upham, of 90 Knowling Mead, Tenby.

Clarice was born on June 6, 1929, at Sunny Hill, Stepaside, the fifth child of George and Alice John. She left school and went to work for Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Walters, of Tenby. She married Dennis Upham in December 1951 and was married to him for 45 years until his death in 1996.
During her working life, Clarice was a school cook at Greenhill School for many years and then a Saga rep and gave her time to local organisations, including the Red Cross and WRVS, where she ran the Joans Club on Thursday afternoons. She retired after 35 years service.

During that time, she coached several of the younger players, some of whom went on to gain international honours. She also met her very good friend Charles Proctor there and they spent their later years walking the dogs, playing bowls and enjoying each other’s company until his death in 2014. Her own health started to decline, but she still played bowls and cared for her garden.

Mrs. B. A. J. Dorling
Tenby
Family and friends gathered in St. Mary’s Church for the funeral of Mrs. Beatrice Alice Joan Dorling (known as Joan), who died in Belmont Court Nursing Home on January 23.
Joan spent most of her life living in the Tenby area. She was born in Pembroke on January 1, 1924, the only child of Sydney and Hilda Owens.
At that time, her father was employed at HM Dockyard, Pembroke Dock. Some time later, the family moved to New Hedges, during which time her father was employed at the quarry at Penally.
Joan grew up in New Hedges attending the local school. After the outbreak of World War Two, when Joan was old enough she volunteered to join the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) and spent several years on postings throughout the UK, the only time she was not living in the county.
Following her discharge from the WRNS at the end of the war, Joan returned to live with her parents in New Hedges and for many years was employed by Stephen Davies, the men’s outfitter in High Street, Tenby. Later, she also ran her own ladies’ dress shop in premises near the Five Arches.
In 1966, Joan married Eric Dorling, who was employed as a hairdresser at the Army Camp at Manorbier. Eric later became one of the Tenby traffic wardens.
She was very proud of Eric when he was appointed Mace Bearer to the Mayor of Tenby.
Joan and Eric set-up home first, at New Hedges and later moved into a flat in Warren Street, and after some years, a flat in Hanover Court. After Joan retired, she spent a great deal of time assisting at the Tenovus cancer charity shop in the High Street.
Joan was a dedicated member of the congregation of St. Mary’s Church until poor health prevented her attendance at the regular services.
Both Joan and Eric were active members of the Tenby Bowls Club, both representing the club at many tournaments home and away. On many occasions, Joan assisted with the refreshments.
They both really enjoyed the social side of the bowls club and spent many enjoyable hours in the clubhouse and at other club events.
In 2013, with the onset of poor health for both herself and Eric, they decided that they both would move into Belmont Court Nursing Home. Sadly, shortly after the move there, Eric passed away.
Joan remained a popular resident in the nursing home. Each week she would wait for the publication of the Tenby Observer where she would keep up-to-date with the local news, particularly following the reports on the bowling club activities.
The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Joel Barder. Bearers were Simon, Jeremy, Julian, Jason and Harry Rossiter.
Flowers accompanying the cortege were from Mary Arthur and family, Jill and John (Canada).
Donations may be made to Tenby Health Centre and sent care of funeral directors, W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, who conducted the funeral arrangements.
MRS. G. WILLIAMS LANDSHIPPING
The funeral took place on March 9 at St. Jeffrey and St. Oswald Church, Jeffreyston, of Mrs. Gillian Ann Williams, of Minihaven, Landshipping. Gill died peacefully at Withybush Hospital on February 23 after a short illness. She was aged 78.
Born Gillian Ann Stafford in Peterborough in 1939, Gill’s early years were spent under the shadow of World War II. Her father fought in the war and his visits home were infrequent so she spent a lot of time with her maternal grandparents. Her grandfather taught her to knit, and inspired her great love of gardening by giving her a small patch of garden and an ailing tomato plant. Times were hard and the principles of ‘make do and mend’ and stretching every penny as far as possible stayed with her all her life.
Gill was the eldest of three children. Their parents divorced a few years after the war ended, a traumatic time for a child, and after both remarried, the siblings were joined by four younger brothers. All seven were close, Gill being the only one to leave Peterborough. After gaining eight O-Levels from Peterborough County Grammar School, she left to start work at Baker Perkins, a major employer in Peterborough at the time, so she could start earning her own money. On a holiday to Southsea with her workmate, she met John who was from Saundersfoot and in the Navy. They married in Peterborough the following year and settled in Saundersfoot when John left the Navy in 1963.
Money was scarce and with three children (Tracey, Hayley and Gary) to feed, Gill looked for a way to boost the family’s income and started to breed Shetland Sheepdogs and later, bulldogs. This was very difficult to do in a rented council house, so when her father gave her some money after Gary was born, they bought a plot of land in Martletwy and spent four years building a bungalow in their spare time for the family to live in. Gill worked hard to make ends meet, keeping the bulldog business going and using her gardening skills to help make the family as self-sufficient as possible. Her fourth baby, Victoria, arrived in 1977, by which time the bulldogs had been replaced by miniature dachshunds.
After divorce and re-marriage, Gill moved to Landshipping where she lived for nearly 35 years. Adam was born in 1984, a year after the arrival of Andrew, the first of nine grandchildren. Already a busy person, it was around this time that she started to devote more time to the church, regularly attending and helping to raise funds for Martletwy Church. Her faith helped her to get through the adversities she faced during her lifetime, notably when her son Gary died in a road accident in 2000, a devastating loss. Her garden, lovingly developed over the years into the spectacular sight it is today, was another source of solace. Earlier that year, Gary had helped her to prepare her garden for the first annual ‘Gill’s Garden Party’ where visitors could look round the garden, buy plants, enter the raffle and enjoy a delicious tea. Family and the community pitched in to help and over 17 years it is estimated that Gill raised more than £10,000 for Martletwy Church, and after its closure in 2010, for Cancer Research.
Gill was very active in her local community. At the time of her death, she was churchwarden of both Minwear and Jeffreyston Churches, having previously worked hard to try to prevent the closure of Martletwy Church. She was vice-president of Lawrenny and Martletwy Women’s Institute after 45 years of enthusiastic participation, and had served on Martletwy Community Council for many years. She had been secretary of the Landshipping Association since 1999 when she was a founder member of LMN2000. She volunteered for the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service for over 20 years as a Country Cars driver, and after driving the school bus for seven years, she became a governor of St. Oswald’s School; she was still helping in the classroom with the Early Years up to a few weeks before she died. She was a valued member of the Mothers’ Union, the Women’s Fellowship and Pembrokeshire Friends, as well as various horticultural societies.
Gill still managed to find time for her other hobbies and interests. She enjoyed travelling - there were many memorable trips to Europe with friends, gardening tours and visits to her family in Peterborough. She loved having friends and family to stay and taking them to see the sights of the local area, but was equally happy just spending a few hours with the friends who shared her interests. If the weather stopped her from going out to tend her vegetables or potter in the garden, or it was too dark to work in her greenhouse, she would pick up her knitting or cross-stitch and carry on kitting out the little ones. Every new addition to the family (and some other lucky babies) had their own personalised framed cross-stitch design on their bedroom wall, and she made sure that the main body of baby Brenin’s was finished before she died so it would be ready for his christening.
Above all, Gill loved her family. There were four great-grandchildren, as well as her children and grandchildren and she took great pride in them all. She drove to Pontyberem every week to see Victoria’s family and there were also weekly visits to Rosie in Templeton. Her favourite times were the family get-togethers in Landshipping; she would sit in her chair surrounded by children playing and making a noise, and the pleasure would shine from her eyes. Always there to help whenever anyone needed it, seemingly tireless and hard-working until the end, she will be sadly missed and long remembered by everyone whose lives she touched.
Gill leaves to mourn Tracey and Paul; Hayley and Myrddin; Victoria and Michael; Adam and Hayley (children and partners), Helen (daughter-in-law), Andrew and Amy; Sam; Dean and Lowri; Joe and Kasha; Celyn, Quinn, Lucas, Rosie, Brenin (grandchildren and partners), Josh, Ava, Austin, Lexi (great-grandchildren), Mac and Judith; Loraine; Chris and Jane; Robert and Marilyn; Peter and Sheran (brothers and sister and partners), and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
The funeral was conducted by The Rev. Martin Cox and Father Paul Davies, and was followed by interment at Martletwy Churchyard.
The bearers were Andrew Dennis, Dean Morris, Joe Dennis (grandsons), Graeme Stafford (nephew), Dave Cole and Rob Lewis (friends).
There were family flowers only, with donations in lieu made payable to Jeffreyston Church or Minwear Church c/o W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, or Landsker House, 21 Station Road, Narberth, who expertly directed the funeral arrangements.
